Chapter IV : The Gas Bill

Keywords: humour, laughter, crying, Bergson, antisemite, racism, political correctness, death

The multidisciplinary work is a fictional tale about alternative possible future where intolerant claim tolerant to be intolerant due their constant will to notify intolerant being intolerant when discriminating other beings based on loose assumptions, stereotypes and pure ignorance that might be spawning from a slight fear to really meet person with a different background. Ever decreasing time to actually question personal world views in a fruitful conversation becomes less and less kosher, and laughter is overruled with serious self-believe in personal truth that sadly, but truly is just a small fragment of the whole picture, which can be only exposed by allowing oneself to step back from the control room and allow new information to be introduced. Yes it is soothing and increases understanding. Less paranoia, less conspiracy theories and more laughter under the cosmos.

The work is part of Benri Hergson legacy theories and An Dallon illusion disturbance project for masters of Artist without home. The subject matter glorifies once again will to be misunderstood and crying about it, because always hallucinating private investigator Peri-Lekka Ainonen has will to unlearn out of bad habits.

Dan Allon and Ari-Pekka Leinonen

2017, 20:00 / 2017 ,27 Opening: July

Hanut Gallery, Haaliya 31 Street, Tel Aviv

Curator: Tali Kayam

This exhibition ends the summer-season at Hanut Gallery and Theater. The show investigates the borders between aesthetic, humor and street art, at a period saying the word “Nazi” is illegal in Israel, and the politically correct is officially dead. The vitrines of the theater (which usually shows children theatrical shows) are covered with holocaust joke cartoons drawn by Dan Allon, an avid stand-up comedy fan, and an artist who is interested in human experience when related to aesthetics. The drawings make the humor somewhat ridiculous but very painful, as he provokes us with a dilemma: are they funny just because it’s in an artistic context? Should we laugh, cry or be upset? The drawings appear to look like cartoons, referring to Nazi Cartoon (Der Stürmer) and children drawings, to give the historical depth but also to disguise them as innocent.

The spectators will not be able to ignore their on-street presence and will also be requested to participate: next to the drawings there is a QR code which imports a video done by AP Leinonen. The video looks like a multi-character TV show, and Leinonen hosts it as “French Philosopher Berni Hergson” and “Fishraeli artist An Dallon.” While real philosopher Henri Bergson was intrigued by humor, in the movie, he changes roles and characters. Leinonen also reflects on "how funny can holocaust jokes be while told by a Finnish artist, and when do they become anti-semitic?".

"The secret group spreads anti-immigrant messages from far-right sources."

"The child, who plays hard by, picks up a handful, and, the next moment, is astonished to find that nothing remains in his grasp but a few drops of water, water that is far more brackish, far more bitter, than that of the wave which brought it. Laughter comes into being in the self-same fashion. It indicates a slight revolt on the surface of social life. It instantly adopts the changing forms of the disturbance. It also, is a froth with a saline base. Like froth, it sparkles. It is gaiety itself. But the philosopher who gathers a handful to taste may find that the substance is scanty, and the aftertaste bitter." p.200
